Under the Catenate project, work has begun to protect nationally and globally important corals and their associated environment in the Maldives.
The Catenate project, currently being carried out by the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, aims to establish, operate, and sustain a network of effectively managed, equitably and appropriately protected areas in the Maldives. The Environment Ministry states that this will ensure the protection and sustainable management of the Maldives' corals and related biodiversity.
The Ministry of Tourism (MoT) stated that under the Catenate project, protected areas will be established in various regions of the Maldives in the future, special guidelines will be formulated to manage these areas, and awareness programs will be conducted at the island and atoll levels.
The Ministry has also requested those interested in learning more about the progress of the Catenate project to visit the MoT website, and those interested in participating in the activities conducted under this project to contact the relevant section of the MoT.
Organizations working in the field of environmental protection have welcomed the Catenate project. They note that such projects are essential for protecting the fragile environment of the Maldives.
