President Dr. Muizzu has conferred the National Award of Recognition in the field of fisheries to Ibrahim Thahkhan of Vaakaru, GA. Vilingili, as part of the government's National Awards.
Thahkhan received the National Award in the area of pole-and-line fishing. The award was presented to him by the President at the official National Day ceremony held today at Dharubaaruge. The President presented a commemorative plaque as the National Award of Recognition.
Ibrahim Thahkhan entered the fisheries sector at the young age of 14. He has remained in the pole-and-line fishing industry to this day due to his immense passion for it. It is noted that within about a year of fishing, he reached the level of a pole-and-line skipper, earning the trust of boat owners, which was his first major achievement. Since then, he has continued fishing as a skipper up to the present day.
From 1978 until the end of 2008, Thahkhan operated various people's boats as a pole-and-line fishing skipper.
The recipients of the National Award were selected by the National Awards Committee, established by the President for this purpose. During the committee's visit to Vilingili to evaluate Thahkhan's work, they met with council members to gather information about Skipper Thahkhan's services in fisheries. The committee stated that during their trip, it was noted that Ibrahim Thahkhan is a hardworking skipper who has spent a long period in fisheries and has introduced a large number of skippers to the field.
In addition to Skipper Thahkhan, 8 individuals and a company were awarded the National Award of Recognition in various fields at today's ceremony.
The National Award is an award given by the government to recognize, appreciate, and encourage the continuous efforts and progress made by individuals, civil institutions, civil societies and organizations, and business entities in the development of the Maldivian nation for the benefit and welfare of the Maldivian nation and society.
