The Fisheries Ministry has stated that a person to represent fishermen on the MIFCO Board of Directors has been determined, and the name will be sent to the Privatization and Corporatization Board today.
Appointing a representative for fishermen to the MIFCO board to expand their role in the management of MIFCO is among the pledges to be fulfilled within the first 100 days of this government.
Speaking at a press conference held at the ministry today to disclose the progress of the Fisheries Ministry's tasks included in the government's "Hafuthaa-14" roadmap, Minister Ahmed Shiyam stated that the ministry has shortlisted the applicants for the opportunity opened to fishermen and is working on the appointment.
The Minister said that with the appointment of a fisherman to the board, MIFCO's day-to-day operations will be shared with the fishermen, and they will have a say in the management of MIFCO.
The opportunity for a fisherman to apply for the MIFCO board was open from December 28 last year until January 11. The Minister did not disclose the number of fishermen who submitted their names during this period.
MIFCO, which was operating as a subsidiary of STO, was changed to a 100% state-owned enterprise last year. The government has stated that this is an important step taken to change MIFCO's management system and establish it as an independent company operated more robustly with the full participation of Maldivian fishermen.
