The Naalaafushi Island Council in Meemu Atoll has decided to hold a fishing tournament to celebrate this year's Fishermen's Day.
The Naalaafushi Council stated that this fishing tournament is an event open to the public, organized to celebrate the occasion at the island level. The council also mentioned that the tournament will be held on Saturday, December 6, 2025.
The Naalaafushi Council opened the opportunity to participate in the fishing tournament today. The council has requested interested parties to fill out the "Naalaafushi Council Fishing Tournament 2025" participation form and submit it before 13:00 on Thursday, December 4, 2025. The form can be submitted to the council office or via email. Forms should be emailed to info@naalaafushi.gov.mv.
The council also published the rules of the fishing tournament today. According to the rules, participation is open to residents of Naalaafushi, individuals married to people from Naalaafushi, and those employed in Naalaafushi. The rules state that the tournament will proceed if a minimum of three teams participate, and each participating team must have a minimum of 4 members and a maximum of 14 members. Furthermore, the rules specify that each team can only depart for fishing if at least 4 members are present to go fishing.
The tournament winners will be selected based on the weight of the fish caught, with the teams weighing the most kilos winning. Cash prizes will be awarded to the first, second, and third-place teams, as well as the team that catches the most fish and the individual who catches the heaviest fish.
Positions to be selected in the tournament and the designated prizes:
- 1st place team: 3,500 Rufiyaa
- 2nd place team: 2,500 Rufiyaa
- 3rd place team: 1,500 Rufiyaa
- Individual who caught the heaviest fish: 500 Rufiyaa
- Team that caught the most fish: 500 Rufiyaa
The Naalaafushi Council Fishing Tournament 2025 is an event held to increase social cohesion among the residents of Naalaafushi, revive and foster the spirit of fishing, and celebrate Fishermen's Day colorfully at the island level.
