The Maritime Training Institute (MTI) has commenced classes for a new batch of its Niyami Course-2.
Classes for this course began yesterday at MTI's Male' campus. Aimed at vessel owners, captains, fishermen, and those interested in the field, the course will run until tomorrow, according to MTI. Eight individuals are participating in this 30-hour course.
MTI Lecturer Shinan stated that through this course, participants will learn how to operate and maintain vessels, as well as the safety standards required for boats. Furthermore, Shinan noted that participants will learn all the vessel safety regulations set by the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation.
Students enrolled in the course believe that such training gives them great encouragement and confidence to go out to sea. In addition, one student mentioned that learning how to act during maritime emergencies provides them with the assurance to face such situations with steadfastness.
"From this course, we learn how to navigate vessels, the rules and regulations, safety, and how to send distress signals. Moreover, since the Maldives is a country surrounded by the sea, you never know when an incident might occur at sea. However, even if electronic equipment fails, we will learn how to navigate by sending distress calls using EPIRB and manually plotting coordinates on a map," a course participant said.
Niyami Course-2 is a course that facilitates obtaining the license required to captain Category-B vessels, which can travel up to 24 miles outside the atolls of the Maldives.
The Maritime Training Institute (MTI) is currently the fastest-growing training institute in the Maldivian maritime industry. The institute conducts numerous technical courses required to develop the maritime sector. Niyami Course-2 is one of these courses. MTI is also currently preparing to hold Niyami Course-2 classes in Gadhdhoo, Inguraidhoo, and Omadhoo this year.
