The government has contracted Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) to develop a boat beaching area in AA. Ukulhas.
The project to develop the AA. Ukulhas boat beaching area was awarded to MTCC by the government during a ceremony held yesterday when President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu visited Ukulhas to meet its residents, as part of his ongoing tour of the inhabited islands of North Ari Atoll.
At the ceremony, Managing Director Deputy Commissioner of Police (Retired) Ahmed Saudhee signed the project agreement on behalf of MTCC. Minister Dr. Abdulla Muththalib signed on behalf of the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure.
Under this agreement, MTCC is required to dredge an area of 15,860 cubic meters, construct a 117-meter rock boulder breakwater at the channel, install a 63-meter rock boulder revetment, and build a 60-meter rock boulder groyne.
MTCC was awarded the project for MVR 19.95 million, to be completed within 240 days.
With a population of 1,185, the residents of Ukulhas primarily earn their income through fishing and the guesthouse business. MTCC stated that once the development of the island's boat beaching area is completed, it will be easier to beach speedboats used by guesthouse operators as well as fishing vessels, which will benefit the island's economy.
