Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has announced that the company is preparing to develop a dockyard in HA. Ihavandhoo.
MPL announced its decision to develop a slipway and a dockyard in Ihavandhoo on September 20 of this year. Following discussions with the Ihavandhoo Council, land was allocated for the project, and an agreement to develop the dockyard was signed yesterday between MPL and the Ihavandhoo Council.
At a special ceremony held yesterday at the Ihavandhoo Council, the agreement to develop the dockyard was signed on behalf of MPL by the company's Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mohamed Wajeeh Ibrahim. Signing on behalf of the Ihavandhoo Council was the Council President, Ahmed Sabah.
According to the agreement, the Ihavandhoo Council has allocated 100,000 square feet of land from the island's reclaimed area to establish the dockyard. The land has been leased to MPL for a period of 50 years without any rent. The council leased the land rent-free because the project requires a significant investment and is expected to bring revolutionary economic changes to the island. Providing employment opportunities for the island's residents through this project is also one of the main reasons.
MPL stated that the practical work to establish the dockyard will begin next month, with the goal of completing the dockyard and commencing services within six months.
The dockyard is designed to provide repair and maintenance services for vessels arriving from abroad. MPL also stated that arrangements will be in place to provide various services required by fishing vessels.
