The Ministry of Fisheries has launched ‘Moodhu Fest’, an event organised to celebrate World Oceans Day.
The festival was inaugurated by the Minister of Fisheries, Ahmed Shiyam. The opening ceremony was attended by the Ambassador of China to the Maldives, Wang Lixin (Kong Jianhua), and senior officials of the Fisheries Ministry.
During the opening ceremony, Minister Shiyam and Ambassador Kong Jianhua presented certificates to the winners of the quiz held by the Fisheries Ministry to mark Oceans Day.
The festival began with an activity named ‘Discover Dive’. Over 40 children participated in this activity. The festival features stalls from the Fisheries Ministry, Maandhoo Fisheries, Environmental Protection Agency, Manta Trust, Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme, Maldives Marine Research Centre, Maldives Plastic Alliance, Save the Oceans, Parley, and Clean Maldives. In addition to showcasing the work being done by these organisations, the stalls provide information on marine and reef life, share information to raise public awareness about the ocean, and offer opportunities to play various fun games. The stalls are open to the general public.
The ‘Moodhu Fest’ activities will continue until 6:00 pm. Free water sports activities are planned to run until 6:00 pm, and the Ministry stated that participation in these activities is free of charge. The festival is taking place in the beach area near Dhiraagu in Hulhumale.
‘Moodhu Fest’ is being conducted with the assistance of Ooredoo Maldives, Dive Club Maldives, Moodhu Bulhaa, Divers Lodge, Housing Development Corporation (HDC), Horizon Fisheries, MWSC, Higher Way, Redwave, and Athion.
