The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has advised against all non-essential sea travel.
MNDF made this appeal as the southwest monsoon intensifies over the Maldives, with the National Meteorological Service forecasting worsening weather across the country until coming Thursday, specifically predicting strong winds, rain, and rough seas nationwide.
In a message released last night for the attention of seafarers, MNDF urged the public to avoid non-essential sea travel, and requested those who must travel to pay special attention to the weather.
For the attention of sea-going vessels, MNDF requested checking whether life jackets, communication systems, and dewatering pumps are in good working condition. They also urged cargo vessels not to overload goods beyond capacity and to keep licenses on board. Furthermore, they advised extra caution if traveling at night.
In the MNDF message, diving and water sports operators were also urged to pay special attention to the weather, and advised not to travel when the National Meteorological Service issues a Yellow or Orange alert.
