The Ministry of Fisheries has announced that priority will be given to prominent fishing islands when selecting the host island for the 45th Fishermen's Day official celebrations.
In a circular sent to atoll councils to publicly announce that the opportunity to host this year's official Fishermen's Day celebrations is open to islands across all atolls in the Maldives, the Ministry of Fisheries stated that priority will be given to fishing islands during the selection process. According to the circular, the criteria for determining a fishing island will be based on the number of registered fishermen and fishing vessels on the island.
Furthermore, the circular outlined five additional points that will be considered when selecting the host island. These include ensuring the island is not hosting another national-level day this year, ensuring at least five years have passed if the island previously hosted Fishermen's Day, and assessing the level of interest among the island's residents in celebrating the occasion. Additional factors include infrastructural development on the island, arrangements for welcoming guests, accommodation facilities for attendees, and the specific proposals put forward by the island for the celebrations.
