The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO), which operates the facility, has stated that efforts are underway to bring a permanent solution to the issues faced by the Addu Fisheries Complex (AFC) Hulhumeedhoo ice plant.
Regarding the halt in operations at the Hulhumeedhoo ice plant and the suspension of ice issuance to fishermen, MIFCO noted that generally, only a few vessels purchase ice from the facility. However, the company assured that work is ongoing to bring a permanent solution to the problems encountered.
The Hulhumeedhoo ice plant's operations were halted due to technical issues with its units. MIFCO explained that one unit is facing a problem with its drum, while the second unit has experienced a gas leak.
Last year, due to poor fishing in the Addu region, many vessels were operating in Huvadhoo and the central atolls. However, fishing has now improved, and many vessels have started fishing in the Addu region again. Consequently, the volume of fish weighed at AFC has relatively increased. Yesterday alone, 42.26 metric tonnes of fish were weighed at AFC.
