The state fisheries company (MIFCO) has stated that it has decided to provide a case of canned tuna in oil to every household during the upcoming month of Ramadan.
Sharing the preparations being made to provide a case of canned tuna to every household in accordance with the pledge of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu with "Keyolha", the Deputy Manager of MIFCO's PR and Media Unit, Ibrahim Saeed (Kade), said that the company produces close to a hundred thousand cans of tuna for every Ramadan, and it is expected that more canned tuna will be needed for the local market following the President's pledge.
"This is an order that STO is carrying out with MIFCO in relation to the President's pledge. Every household will be given a 48-can case of tuna in oil. It will be distributed by STO," Kade said.
A can of MIFCO's Fasmeeru brand tuna in oil is currently sold in the market for 16 Rufiyaa. Based on this price, it is estimated that it will cost close to 63 million to gift a case of canned tuna to every household.
With fishing being good these days, the amount of fish weighed to MIFCO by fishermen has also relatively increased. Therefore, it is expected that MIFCO will receive enough fish to prepare the canned tuna to be given to households.
President Dr. Muizzu announced the decision to provide a case of canned tuna to every household at the government's expense during the upcoming month of Ramadan while speaking at the ceremony held to mark the government's one-year anniversary.
The government gifted a sack of rice and flour to every household last Ramadan, in addition to providing discounts on water and electricity bills. The President has previously stated that discounts on electricity and water bills will be provided this year as well.
