MIFCO has revealed that discussions are underway to purchase the fish canning factory established by Ensis Fisheries in Hulhumale'.
In a press release detailing efforts to improve the condition of MIFCO's centers and increase processing capacity, the company stated that its biggest current challenge is the obstacles caused by significant delays in mandatory repair and maintenance of fish purchasing vessels, operational infrastructure, machinery, and other equipment. Therefore, while priority has been given to repair work, MIFCO's statement noted that efforts are being made in various areas to increase the company's overall productivity.
MIFCO's statement also highlighted the company's ongoing efforts to acquire fish purchasing and storage capacity, and to advance the capacity for value addition to purchased fish in the Maldives. In this regard, it stated that major investments are currently being made to increase capacity with the assistance of the government and multilateral development finance.
Under these ongoing efforts, MIFCO stated that the process of purchasing Ensis Fisheries' cannery is underway. MIFCO noted that the Ensis cannery is a facility that ceased operations a year and a half ago after investing in modern machinery and equipment. Furthermore, MIFCO stated that studies have been completed to acquire the processing capacity of the Ensis cannery, and discussions are ongoing with Ensis to purchase the facility.
