MIFCO to Begin Purchasing Fish from Fuvahmulah City Harbour

The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has announced preparations to commence fish purchasing operations from the Fuvahmulah City harbour.

In a press release issued today, MIFCO stated that the company will begin buying fish from the Fuvahmulah City harbour during this ongoing month of August. According to MIFCO, once purchasing begins, permanent arrangements for buying fish from the harbour will be established.

MIFCO stated that CEO Brigadier General (Retired) Farhath Shaheer gave assurances of permanent fish purchasing from the Fuvahmulah City harbour during a meeting held with the Fuvahmulah City Council this week. Furthermore, the CEO assured that the fish processing centre currently being established in Fuvahmulah City will be brought into operation this year, allowing the city's residents to purchase processed fish.

With the aim of making the fishing industry and the work of fishermen profitable and sustainable, MIFCO is expanding its operations. While fish purchasing from Fuvahmulah City will begin this month, preparations are also underway to directly export fish from Addu City next month. MIFCO also noted that the stages to begin value addition to fish in Addu City are progressing to start within this year.

In addition, under the ongoing efforts to improve the condition of MIFCO centres and increase processing capacity, plans are in place to repair the harbour roads at Kooddoo Fisheries Complex to improve fish purchasing conditions, and to upgrade the local production factory. Furthermore, quick repairs and maintenance work at the Felivaru Cannery have now begun. MIFCO has previously stated that the fish purchasing centre being established in GDh. Thinadhoo will be opened and brought into operation in late 2026, and preparations to start buying large yellowfin tuna caught in the north and south will commence this year.
