Looking at the fish purchases by the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) over the past 28 years, the Ministry of Fisheries has revealed that the highest amount of fish purchased in a January was in January of this year.

According to a poster published on the official Twitter account of the Ministry of Fisheries, the highest amount of fish weighed to MIFCO in a January since 1997 was recorded this January, with 8,324 metric tonnes of fish weighed to MIFCO during the month. However, it did not state the exact amount of fish weighed in January 1997.

Due to poor fishing last year and various issues faced in the fishing industry, the number of vessels going out to sea decreased, the amount of fish weighed dropped, and fish exports also declined significantly last year. However, as fishing improved at the start of this year and MIFCO began paying for purchased fish regularly, many vessels have started going out to sea again. The rate of fish weighed to MIFCO has increased this year due to this reason.
