Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has revealed that it is preparing to export fish purchased in Addu City directly from Addu to foreign markets.
In a statement released last night detailing efforts to improve the condition of MIFCO centers and increase processing capacity, the company stated that instead of transporting fish purchased in Addu City to Huvadhu Atoll, it plans to begin exporting directly from Addu Atoll within the coming month. MIFCO also stated that the stages of commencing value-added fish processing in Addu City are underway to begin this year.
MIFCO's statement also revealed measures decided upon to improve the fish purchasing situation in Kooddoo during this period of low fishing, alongside efforts to increase the company's processing capacity. These include repairing the harbor roads and upgrading Kooddoo's local production factory.
MIFCO stated that quick repair and maintenance work on the Felivaru Cannery will also begin this August. MIFCO highlighted these works as essential and important tasks that must be done at this time.
Furthermore, MIFCO stated that it is preparing to open and bring into operation the fish purchasing center being established in GDh. Thinadhoo by late 2026, and to begin preparations this year to purchase large yellowfin tuna caught in the north and south.
