MIFCO Opens Dried Fish Factory in Kanduoiygiri

The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has opened a dried fish factory at the Kanduoiygiri Fish Village.

The factory was officially inaugurated at a ceremony held in Kanduoiygiri this evening by the State Minister of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources, Mohamed Muthalib. The ceremony was attended by MIFCO's Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Mohamed Anas, along with senior officials from the Fisheries Ministry and MIFCO.

The Kanduoiygiri dried fish factory has a processing capacity of 3 tonnes per day. Equipped with high-quality facilities for boiling and drying fish, MIFCO stated that the factory was opened after obtaining the necessary permits to ensure services are provided at the safest health standards, alongside robust measures to maintain quality in line with other MIFCO products.

The preparation of smoked fish (valhomas) and dried fish commenced at the factory today. MIFCO noted that the production of items such as fish paste (rihaakuru) and crushed dried fish will also begin at the facility very soon. The company highlighted this as a significant step towards achieving its goal of modernizing MIFCO's operations.

Kanduoiygiri was handed back to MIFCO and brought back into operation earlier this year, after previously being placed under the supervision of the MNDF for state purposes. In addition to the dried fish factory opened today, MIFCO stated that once the cold storage facility being established in Kanduoiygiri is completed, the island will become a main hub for exporting fish and fish products abroad.
