The state fisheries company MIFCO has stated that the canned fish scheduled to be distributed to households next Ramadan, in accordance with the pledge of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, will not be 40 grams short.
MIFCO made this statement to clarify the truth to the public, as news is being spread on various platforms claiming that the canned fish the government has decided to distribute is currently being released and sold in the market with 40 grams deducted from its net weight.
MIFCO stated that false stories are being spread regarding the weight of the canned fish to be distributed for Ramadan, and that the company introduced the 140-gram canned fish to the market for small households and with the intention of producing a single-use canned fish.
"The canned fish distributed free of charge to households for Ramadan, in accordance with the President's pledge, will not be 40 grams short of fish. False stories are being spread. The 140-gram was introduced to the market for small households and as a single-use item. Because refrigerating canned fish is not a good practice." MIFCO stated.
MIFCO's Fasmeeru brand 180-gram canned fish in oil is being sold for 16 Rufiyaa. And the newly introduced 140-gram canned fish is being sold for 15 Rufiyaa. According to MIFCO, the canned fish issued to households during Ramadan will be the 180-gram net weight canned fish in oil. MIFCO stated that the company produces close to a hundred thousand cans of fish for every Ramadan, and it is expected that more canned fish will be needed for the local market due to the President's pledge.
President Dr. Muizzu announced the decision to give a case of canned fish to every household at the government's expense next Ramadan while speaking at the ceremony held to mark the government's one-year anniversary.
The government gifted a sack of rice and flour to every household last Ramadan, in addition to giving a discount on water and electricity bills. The President has previously stated that a discount will be given on electricity and water bills this year as well.
