MIFCO begins purchasing fish from Fuvahmulah City harbour

The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has commenced purchasing fish from the Fuvahmulah City harbour.

According to MIFCO, the company's vessel arrived in the city last Thursday. Fish purchasing began yesterday.

MIFCO is utilizing its vessel "Randhi-19" to buy fish from Fuvahmulah City. The vessel has a capacity of 28.4 metric tonnes.

MIFCO's CEO, Brigadier General (Retired) Farhath Shaheer, assured that permanent arrangements for purchasing fish from Fuvahmulah City would be established during a meeting with the city council earlier this month. At the meeting, the CEO also gave assurances that the fish processing centre currently being established in Fuvahmulah City will be brought into operation this year, allowing the city's residents to purchase processed fish. MIFCO is currently repairing the processing facility in Fuvahmulah City.

With the aim of making the fisheries industry and the work of fishermen profitable and sustainable, MIFCO is expanding its operations. While fish purchasing has begun in Fuvahmulah City this month, preparations are underway to export fish directly from Addu City next month. MIFCO has also stated that the stages to begin value-addition work on fish in Addu City are progressing this year.

Furthermore, as part of the efforts to improve the condition of MIFCO's centres and increase processing capacity, work is underway to improve the fish purchasing situation at the Kooddoo Fisheries Complex and upgrade the local production factory. In addition, MIFCO has previously stated that the fish purchasing centre being established in GDh. Thinadhoo will be opened and brought into operation in late 2026, and preparations to begin purchasing yellowfin tuna caught in the north and south for MIFCO are set to commence this year.
