Addu City Council's Meedhoo constituency councilor, Aiminath Saliha, has requested the repair of the long-severed trolling and pole-and-line FADs in Meedhoo ward.
Councilor Saliha made this request at the Fisheries Ministry yesterday, during a consultative meeting held with senior officials of the Fisheries Ministry. In addition to the State Minister of the Fisheries Ministry, Ahmed Muthalib, the ministry's Director General Ahmed Yameen participated in this meeting.
During this consultative meeting held at Councilor Saliha's request to resolve the difficulties faced by the fishermen of Addu City's Meedhoo ward, Councilor Saliha shared the concerns of Addu Meedhoo's fishermen. Accordingly, Councilor Saliha requested to resolve the issue of the severed trolling FAD and pole-and-line FAD in the Meedhoo area. Furthermore, discussions were held regarding resolving the difficulties faced by Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo fishermen in obtaining ice, and things that could be done in the fisheries sector in the Hulhumeedhoo area.
The State Minister of the Fisheries Ministry, Ahmed Muthalib, gave assurances that the ministry will work to resolve the difficulties faced by the fishermen of the area as requested by Councilor Saliha. In this regard, Muthalib stated that the Meedhoo FADs will be repaired during the ministry's FAD team's first trip to the south.
Saliha stated that although there is only one pole-and-line fishing vessel in Meedhoo, the number of reef fishing vessels is close to 50. Therefore, repairing the FADs and establishing convenient arrangements to obtain ice would be a great relief for the fishing community of the ward.
