President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has established a new agency named the 'Maldives Transportation Safety Board'.
According to a directive issued by the President's Office announcing the decision, the President established the 'Maldives Transportation Safety Board' yesterday under the powers vested in him by Article 116 of the Constitution. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has determined that the agency will operate under the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation. The directive also stated that the President has designated the number 501 to be used in official correspondence addressed to the Maldives Transportation Safety Board by state agencies.
The President's Office directive stated that the Maldives Transportation Safety Board was established because the President deemed it essential to have a specific government agency to investigate various incidents and accidents occurring in the Maldives' transportation sector, in order to further strengthen safety and security in the sector.
The main functions of this board include investigating various incidents and accidents occurring in the land, sea, and civil aviation transportation sectors of the Maldives, identifying the causes of such incidents, and providing advice and technical assistance to relevant authorities to strengthen transportation safety and security standards and regulations based on the findings of accident investigations. Furthermore, it includes providing advice and technical assistance to relevant authorities on necessary changes to the land, sea, and civil aviation transportation systems of the Maldives in terms of safety and security, conducting research and analysis to identify safety issues and trends in the land, sea, and civil aviation transportation sectors of the Maldives, organizing public hearings related to various incidents and accidents in the land, sea, and civil aviation transportation sectors of the Maldives, as well as publishing information and reports that need to be made public in connection with investigations of incidents and accidents.
