The Maldives has participated in the third United Nations Ocean Conference.
The Maldivian delegation attending the conference, which began today in Nice, France, includes Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam, Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim, and senior officials from the Fisheries Ministry and the Environment Ministry. These officials participated in the opening session of the conference held today. The Fisheries Ministry stated that Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam is scheduled to deliver a statement as a senior member of the Maldivian delegation participating in this conference.
The Maldivian government notes that this conference is being held at a very crucial time for the future of the world. Furthermore, protecting the oceans and its resources and utilizing them sustainably is vital for the future of small island nations like the Maldives. Regarding this conference, Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam stated that taking urgent measures to eliminate threats to the oceans is an absolute necessity.
"I hope that by working with all the delegates participating in this conference, we can pave the way to take the necessary measures to protect and safeguard our oceans," the Minister said.
Regarding this conference, Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim stated that since the Maldives is a country comprised of 99 percent ocean, the outcome of this conference will be very important for the Maldives. He also stated that he will raise the voice of the Maldives at the conference and share the efforts being made by the Maldives to protect the oceans.
The third United Nations Ocean Conference, taking place in Nice, France from June 9 to 13, is expected to discuss protecting marine life and mitigating the impacts of climate change on the oceans. While 120 countries are participating in this meeting, over 50 global leaders, policymakers, scientists, environmental and marine conservation organizations, and investors are in attendance.
A special session initiated by the Maldives is scheduled to be held on the sidelines of this conference. The Fisheries Ministry stated that in this session, extensive discussions and exchanges of ideas will take place, along with proposals from technical experts in the field, regarding the measures that need to be taken at the national and international levels to ensure that small-scale fisheries in countries like the Maldives are developed sustainably through a planned, managed, and monitored system.
