Discussions have been held between the Maldives and Sri Lanka regarding measures to further strengthen joint efforts for the safety and security of their shared maritime boundaries.
These discussions took place during a courtesy call made today by the Minister of Defence, Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon, to the President of Sri Lanka, Anura Kumara Dissanayake. During the meeting held this morning at Kurumba Maldives, the two dignitaries primarily discussed enhancing cooperation between the two countries in the defence sector. Furthermore, they discussed steps that could be taken to strengthen the frameworks currently being implemented by both nations to ensure maritime safety and security in the region. Senior officials of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) accompanied the Minister of Defence at this meeting.
The current state visit of Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to the Maldives is at the invitation of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. During the discussions held between the two countries on this trip, both leaders gave assurances that Sri Lanka and the Maldives will work together to overcome challenges such as Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing. They also discussed exchanging information and experiences to promote sustainable fishing practices. Additionally, discussions were held on ways to increase cooperation and assistance between the Maldives and Sri Lanka in addressing climate change, protecting the environment, and ensuring the safety and security of the Indian Ocean.
