Maldives fisheries have been promoted at the Global Seafood Marketplace 2026 currently underway in Barcelona, Spain.
The promotion of Maldives fisheries took place during a special panel discussion held on the sidelines of the fair under the theme "From Maldives to the World".
This panel discussion, held to promote and celebrate the special rating assigned to Maldives tuna fisheries by Seafood Watch, was attended by the Minister of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam, Monterey Bay Aquarium's Policy and Stakeholder Engagement Director Josh Madeira, and MIFCO's Strategic Consultant Athif Shakoor.
Information regarding the challenges and opportunities in the Maldives fisheries sector was shared during this panel discussion. The Fisheries Ministry stated that discussions were also held on sustainable fishing, entering the global market, and value creation.
The Global Seafood Marketplace 2026 is the premier global seafood marketplace connecting the entire global seafood industry. Many countries, in addition to the Maldives, participated in this 3-day fair held in Barcelona.
The Maldives was represented at the fair by the Minister of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam and several companies active in the fisheries sector. These include the Maldives Fisheries and Ocean Resources Marketing and Promotion Corporation, MIFCO, Horizon Fisheries Private Limited, Ensis Fisheries Private Limited, Blue Saltwater Private Limited, and Big Fish Maldives Private Limited.
