The Maldives has called for solutions to the challenges faced by fisheries in countries like the Maldives.

Speaking at a meeting initiated by the International Pole and Line Foundation on the sidelines of the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference currently underway in Nice, France, State Minister of the Fisheries Ministry Aminath Hussain Shareef made this appeal. At the meeting, the State Minister advocated regarding the challenges faced by fisheries in countries like the Maldives. She also advocated for finding a solution to the "market access" challenges faced by the fisheries sector.

Speaking on how the Maldives advocated for the demand for fisheries certificates at the IOTC, she stated that this should not be a burden borne solely by Small Island Developing States.

Welcoming the step taken by the FAO to amend the ecolabelling guidelines, State Minister Aminath Hussain Shareef stated that what is most important for the Maldives at this time is a fair, transparent certification system built by fishers for fishers. She also stated that the system should be one that caters to even the smallest scale fisheries operating in the sector.
