Discussions have been held on strengthening ties in mutually beneficial areas for the Maldives and the European Union, including sustainable fisheries practices and trade expansion.
These discussions took place on the sidelines of the Global Tourism Forum Annual Meeting 2025, during a meeting between the Special Envoy of the President and former President, Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan, and the European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Costas Kadis.
Speaking at the meeting, the Special Envoy highlighted the weight of the fisheries industry in the Maldivian economy and noted the importance of equal access to international markets to compete on a level playing field with other parties. Both sides also noted the importance of working together to sustainably manage fisheries and stop illegal fishing.
During the meeting, discussions were held on strengthening ties in mutually beneficial areas for the Maldives and the European Union, including sustainable fisheries practices and trade expansion.
The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment to work towards sustaining the long-standing close relationship between the Maldives and the European Union.
