Makunudhoo Council requests to expedite the island's ice plant project

The Makunudhoo Council has requested the Fisheries Ministry to expedite the work on the HDh. Makunudhoo ice plant.

The council made this request during a meeting held today with the Fisheries Ministry and the Member of Parliament for the Makunudhoo constituency, Adam Shafeeq. The meeting was attended by the Minister of State for Fisheries, Ismail Azmy Adhunan, and Minister of State Mohamed Naif.

During this meeting, the council requested to speed up the Makunudhoo ice plant project. They also held extensive discussions on opportunities in the fisheries and agriculture sectors. Furthermore, the council shared matters they wish to carry out in collaboration with the ministry.

The government established an ice plant in HDh. Makunudhoo and began supplying ice to vessels in February 2018. The ice plant in Makunudhoo, an island that engages in large-scale fishing, was established by contracting a company named Sea Treasures Maldives. At the time, the operation of the ice plant was also handed over to that company. However, the government has now taken over the ice plant and started efforts to bring it into operation.

The Fisheries Ministry has previously stated that this is part of the government's ongoing efforts to resolve the difficulties faced by fishermen in the north in obtaining ice.
