The ice plant operated by the island council in R. Maduvvari has been brought under the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO).
During a meeting held just now at the council office, MIFCO signed the agreement to take over the ice plant. The agreement was signed on behalf of MIFCO by the company's Chief Financial Officer, Ilyas Haneef. On behalf of the council, the agreement was signed by Council President Mohamed Sodiq (Chote).
While the government is working to arrange easy access to ice for fishermen, the decision for MIFCO to operate the Maduvvari ice plant was made at the request of the fishermen. The council handed the ice plant over to MIFCO due to difficulties in running operations caused by extremely high fuel prices. The facility was handed over to MIFCO on the condition of paying land rent.
The Maduvvari ice plant is a facility capable of producing 25 tonnes of ice and storing 50 tonnes of ice. It was opened on Fishermen's Day, December 10, 2021. The previous government had granted the Maduvvari Council all opportunities to operate, maintain, and generate profit from the ice plant. Furthermore, it is a property of the council.
In addition to Maduvvari, there are also ice plants in Alifushi and Dhuvaafaru in R Atoll.
