The project to develop the harbour in L. Maamendhoo has been awarded to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).
The agreement to award this project to MTCC was signed on behalf of the government during a ceremony held to meet the residents of Maamendhoo, as part of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's tour of the inhabited islands in Haddhunmathi atoll.
The agreement for this project was signed on behalf of the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure by Minister Dr. Abdulla Muththalib. On behalf of MTCC, it was signed by the Managing Director, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Retired) Ahmed Saudhee. The ceremony was attended by cabinet ministers, members of parliament, members of the Maamendhoo Council, and senior government officials.
Under this project, dredging of 70,674 cubic meters of the lagoon and channel, construction of a 354-meter quay wall, a 307-meter breakwater, a 26-meter channel breakwater, a 24-meter submerged breakwater, an 88-meter revetment, a 1,715-square-meter pavement, and the installation of harbour lights will be carried out.
This project was awarded to MTCC for 67.87 million Rufiyaa, to be completed within 400 days.
Maamendhoo, with a population of 1,370, is a fishing island. Fishermen and residents of the island are currently experiencing difficulties due to the lack of space in the existing harbour. With the completion of the newly signed harbour development project, the residents will have a spacious harbour to moor fishing vessels. It will also provide ease for loading goods and embarking and disembarking.
