Statistics from the project contractor, Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), show that a significant portion of the K. Maafushi harbour upgrade project has been completed.
According to the information released by MTCC, 65% of the harbour upgrade project is now complete. MTCC stated that among the project works, the profiling of the breakwater is currently underway.
The Ministry of Infrastructure awarded the K. Maafushi harbour upgrade project to MTCC on 23 January 2023. MTCC commenced the practical work of this 82.6 million Rufiyaa project on 29 May 2023.
Under this project, it is planned to dredge a new harbour basin area of 63,711 cubic metres, re-dredge a previously dredged lagoon area of 28,836 cubic metres, dredge a channel area of 4,414 cubic metres, and construct a 31-metre breakwater. Additionally, a 680-metre rock boulder revetment and a 700-metre geobag revetment will be constructed.
Furthermore, the project includes the construction of a 374-metre quay wall, a 160-metre long and 2-metre wide concrete jetty, and a 19-metre long and 3-metre wide bridge. The installation of 1,869 square metres of harbour pavement and harbour lights is also included.
Maafushi is an island with significant activities in the tourism and fisheries industries, and its harbour is used by a large number of vessels operating in both these sectors. The development of the harbour will make it easier to embark and disembark, allow vessels used in economic activities to dock easily, and increase the profits gained from commercial activities.
