Lost FADs in Thaa Atoll to be replaced this week: Minister Shiyam

Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam has stated that the lost Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) in Thaa Atoll will be replaced this week.

Under the FAD deployment programme conducted by the Fisheries Ministry, a team from the ministry is currently travelling to the central atolls. During this trip, a sports fishing FAD was deployed off the coast of Dhiggaru in Meemu Atoll today.

Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam said that since some of the previously deployed FADs in Thaa Atoll have been lost, the ministry team will also replace these FADs during their trip this week.

Out of the 6 FADs specifically deployed for pole-and-line fishing in Thaa Atoll, 2 have currently been lost. These are the Hirilandhoo FAD and the Vilufushi FAD. Additionally, out of the 2 FADs deployed specifically for sports fishing, the Buruni FAD has been lost.

Thaa Atoll is an atoll with a large population active in the fishing industry. It is among the atolls where the Fisheries Ministry has deployed the highest number of FADs.
