Kudafari Council has urged the public not to damage the FAD installed off N. Maafaru specifically for pole-and-line fishing.
In an announcement published today to share information about the pole-and-line FAD established off N. Maafaru under the Fisheries Ministry's anchored FAD network project, the N. Kudafari Council stated that FADs targeted for pole-and-line fishing are established at great state expense and hard work, and requested the public to be mindful of them. The council also urged not to cause damage to the pole-and-line FAD established off Maafaru.
The Maafaru FAD is the only FAD specifically for pole-and-line fishing in N. Atoll. Following the loss of the previous FAD anchored 8.5 miles east of Maafaru, the Fisheries Ministry installed a new FAD on the 10th of this month. This time, the pole-and-line FAD was placed 9.5 miles east of N. Maafaru. The FAD number is E10D01-02.
In 2023, trolling FADs were established 5 miles northeast of N. Kendhikulhudhoo and 5 miles south of Manadhoo. Although these two FADs are specifically for sports fishing, pole-and-line fishing can be conducted near them following the latest amendment to the general fisheries regulations. However, reef fishing, sports fishing, and jigging cannot be conducted near the FAD installed off Maafaru specifically for pole-and-line fishing.
