The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO), which operates the facility, has stated that the services of the Kooddoo Fisheries Complex (KFC) ice plant have been interrupted due to a power issue.
MIFCO stated that due to the power issue at the ice plant, they are testing the generator to identify the problem and are working to resolve it. MIFCO also said that they are working tirelessly to fix the power issue and resume services within the next 24 hours.
Fishermen are expressing concern as they are unable to get ice due to the issue at MIFCO's ice plant. While ice is unavailable from Kooddoo, out of the 11 ice plants in Huvadhu Atoll, ice is currently only available from the Faresmaathodaa ice plant. Fishermen are also expressing concern about this. Fishermen said that while fishing has improved with the Northeast Monsoon, the difficulty in obtaining ice in Huvadhu Atoll, where fishing is best, is unacceptable. Fishermen also said that this is an issue that the government, the Fisheries Ministry, and MIFCO need to prioritize and bring a quick solution to.
MIFCO stated that its engineers are also active in identifying and resolving the issues at the Gadhdhoo and Thinadhoo ice plants.
