The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), the contractor for the government-developed harbour in GA. Kooddoo, has stated that 56% of the project is complete.
Sharing progress on the design and development of the Kooddoo harbour, MTCC stated that the installation of concrete blocks for the quay wall is currently underway, with 88% of this specific task completed. With this, the overall project has reached 56% completion, MTCC said.
Under this 78.37 million Rufiyaa project, works include driving 90 meters of sheet piles, constructing a 365-meter quay wall and a 325-meter breakwater, dredging 33,300 cubic meters for a new harbour basin, and re-dredging 56,216 cubic meters of the previously dredged lagoon. Additionally, 89,516 cubic meters of sand will be used for beach nourishment and land reclamation, along with installing an 87-meter revetment and harbour lights.
The currently utilized harbour in Kooddoo measures 300 feet. Once the government completes the ongoing 400-foot harbour development project and connects it to the existing harbour, the total size will expand to 700 feet.
The government has been making significant efforts to identify and resolve the challenges fishermen face in weighing their catch at Kooddoo. The project to expand and repair the MIFCO-operated harbour in Kooddoo was awarded to MTCC for 78.37 million Rufiyaa.
Kooddoo is the island where MIFCO weighs the highest volume of fish caught by fishermen. Because the current harbour is small and the lagoon has become shallow, this operation has been facing challenges. Currently, fish can be weighed from three vessels simultaneously. However, MIFCO has previously stated that once the newly developed harbour is completed, fish can be weighed from five vessels at the same time.
