The Kandu Rasgefaanu is a highly popular grouper species among Maldivians. It is a fish commonly caught during both day and night bottom fishing.
This fish mostly lives on the outer reef slopes of islands and reefs. It is a very beautiful fish to look at while in the ocean. The front part of the fish's gills is rounded. There are 3 or 4 spines at the bottom of this part. There are no scales between the two eyes of the fish.
Physical characteristics of the fish: – The dorsal fin has 8 hard spines and 11 soft rays. – The pectoral fin has between 16 and 18 soft rays.
The Kandu Rasgefaanu is a fish that appears in two different colours. One type is a white fish with yellow fins. In addition to the black spots on this type, there are blue dots all over the fish. The other type is a brown fish. This fish also has blue dots.
The Kandu Rasgefaanu plays an important role in Maldivian fisheries and is also a very popular fish in the Maldivian diet.
