Japanese Government Will Continue to Support Maldives Fisheries Sector: Ambassador

The newly appointed Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives, Ishigami Rumiko, has assured that the Japanese government will continue to support the Maldives fisheries sector.

She gave this assurance during a meeting held today with Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam. During the meeting, Ambassador Ishigami Rumiko stated that the Japanese government will remain committed to assisting the Maldives fisheries sector and is ready to support any area of fisheries development required by the Maldives.

In this meeting, Minister Shiyam noted and expressed gratitude for the continued assistance and cooperation provided by the Japanese government in advancing the Maldives fisheries sector. The Minister specifically highlighted the work done by Japan to develop human resources through various training programs related to fisheries.

In his remarks, the Minister noted that the "Project for Promotion of Blue Economy in the Fisheries Sector in Maldives" is an important project given special attention, and shared details of the project. In this regard, the Minister stated that under this project, activities to develop bait wells on fishing vessels for long-term bait storage, and value-addition training programs have been conducted in R. Maduvvari, F. Nilandhoo, and M. Dhiggaru.

After assuming the ambassadorship, Ishigami Rumiko arrived in the Maldives on January 7 this year. She presented her credentials to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on February 4.
