Iruthisham Appointed as Maldives' Permanent Representative to the International Maritime Organization

The Maldives' newly appointed Permanent Representative to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has presented her credentials to the organization.

The Maldives appointed Iruthisham Adam, the Ambassador of the Maldives to the United Kingdom and France, as its Permanent Representative to the IMO.

Ambassador Iruthisham Adam presented her credentials to the Secretary-General of the IMO, Arsenio Antonio Dominguez Velasco, at a special ceremony held yesterday at the IMO headquarters in London.

During the ceremony, Ambassador Iruthisham Adam conveyed the good wishes of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and assured the Maldives' continued commitment to strengthening its collaboration with the IMO. The Ambassador also gave assurances on behalf of the Maldivian government to support the IMO's initiatives in building the Maldives' maritime capacity.

The Secretary-General of the IMO welcomed Ambassador Iruthisham Adam and reiterated the IMO's support for the Maldives in various areas of mutual interest.

The IMO is a specialized agency of the United Nations, established on March 17, 1948. Its responsibilities include ensuring maritime safety and security, as well as preventing marine and atmospheric pollution by ships. Establishing and implementing a universally applicable legal framework for the shipping industry is also among the organization's objectives. This framework must be fair, effective, and universally implemented.

Currently, the IMO has 174 Member States and 3 Associate Members. The Maldives joined the IMO on May 31, 1967. Ambassador Iruthisham is the second Permanent Representative accredited to the IMO since the Maldives became a member state.

At the credentials ceremony held yesterday, Ambassador Iruthisham Adam was accompanied by the Deputy High Commissioner of the Maldives to the UK, Mohamed Ahmed, First Secretary Mariyam Asif, and First Secretary Sara Khalid.
