The northern channel used by vessels entering and exiting the Hulhule lagoon for various purposes at Velana International Airport (VIA) has been temporarily closed.
Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), which operates VIA, stated that the Hulhule northern channel was temporarily closed in connection with the preparations for the opening of VIA's new terminal. The company said the northern channel of Hulhule will be closed from 5:30 am today until 7:00 pm tonight.
MACL said that during the hours the northern channel is closed, the southern channel can be used to enter Hulhule and the middle channel can be used to exit the lagoon. MACL also apologized for any inconvenience caused by the temporary closure of the northern channel.
The new terminal at VIA, the main gateway to the Maldives, is scheduled to open tonight. While the opening ceremony of the terminal will be held colorfully tonight, to celebrate the occasion, fireworks are planned to be displayed for six minutes in 16 sea areas around Male' and three areas near the airport at around 20:30 tonight.
MACL has stated that the new passenger terminal will be a spacious terminal with high-quality services and modern facilities.
