The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has stated that the ice plant operated in Addu City's Hithadhoo will be brought back into operation next week.
It has been over a week since fishermen have been unable to get ice due to an issue at the Hithadhoo ice plant.
Regarding this issue, MIFCO said that operations were halted due to a problem with the ice plant's compressor. The delay in resuming operations is because the parts needed for repairs are unavailable in the Maldives and it takes time to import them. MIFCO stated that an order has now been placed to bring in the required 'compressor mechanical seal' from abroad, and it is expected to arrive in the Maldives on the 20th of this month.
Furthermore, MIFCO said that within two or three days of receiving the 'seal', the ice plant will be brought into operation and they will begin issuing ice to fishermen.
The Hithadhoo ice plant has a production capacity of 50 tonnes of ice.
