President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, upon the recommendation of the Cabinet, has decided to designate a specific sea-cage area for commercial-scale grouper farming.
The President made this decision following discussions on a paper submitted by the Ministry of Fisheries to the Cabinet during its meeting held on September 30.
The President's Office stated that a total reef area of 73 hectares (Coordinates: 4°3’53.94″N 73°25’37.87″E), located approximately 7 kilometers south of the Vaadhoo channel, south of Male' Atoll, has been designated by the President as a special sea-cage area for commercial-scale grouper farming. Furthermore, the President's Office noted that this reef has been allocated as a lagoon to be leased, giving priority to individuals interested in starting this business among those participating in mariculture training programs in collaboration with the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources. It was also decided to lease this area targeting Maldivians proposing to experience the mariculture business.
