Ghassan summoned to Parliament over Indian military boarding fishing vessels

It has been decided to summon Defense Minister Ghassan Maumoon to Parliament regarding the issue of Indian military personnel boarding Maldivian fishing vessels.

Ghassan Maumoon is being summoned to tomorrow's parliamentary sitting to be questioned about the issue of Indian military personnel boarding the fishing vessels. This issue has been scheduled for tomorrow's Parliament sitting at 10:30 am.

The proposal to question Minister Ghassan was submitted by Henveiru West constituency member Hassan Latheef. Hassan Latheef's question asks whether it has been confirmed if the Indian military boarded the Maldivian fishing vessels inside Maldivian territory or outside Maldivian territory. He also asked to share the details of how the incident occurred with the Parliament, and what changes need to be brought to the government's policies to prevent such an incident from repeating.

Ghassan was previously summoned to the Parliament's 241 Committee regarding the issue of Indian military boarding Maldivian fishing vessels. However, since that meeting was held in secret, it is not clear how the incident occurred.

Regarding this issue, the Defense Ministry previously stated that boarding teams belonging to Indian Coast Guard Ship 246 and Indian Coast Guard Ship 253 boarded the Maldivian fishing vessels that were fishing within the Maldives' Exclusive Economic Zone. Furthermore, the Defense Ministry stated that the Maldivian government has officially requested the Indian government, through the Maldivian Foreign Ministry, to provide details of the operation conducted by the Indian military in violation of international maritime laws and regulations, without coordinating with any relevant Maldivian authority, on Maldivian fishing vessels fishing in the Maldives' Exclusive Economic Zone.
