Gemanafushi Ice Plant to open next month

The Ministry of Fisheries has announced that the newly established ice plant in GA. Gemanafushi is preparing to open next month.

Under the Indian Exim Bank's Line of Credit facility project, the establishment of an ice plant in GA. Gemanafushi was awarded to India's Rinac company on January 18, 2023. The work was contracted to the company for $1.3 million or 20 million Rufiyaa.

The Fisheries Ministry stated that under this project, a 50-tonne block ice plant and a 100-tonne ice storage have been established in Gemanafushi. The Ministry of Fisheries said today that the project work is complete and they are preparing to open the facility next month.

The Gemanafushi ice plant is scheduled to be operated by handing it over to the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO).

Including the 2 ice plants in Kooddoo, and the ice plants in Gemanafushi, Dhaandhoo, Kolamaafushi, and Dhevvadhoo, there are a total of 6 ice plants in GA Atoll. However, fishermen stated that currently, ice is not available from any island's ice plant except Kooddoo.
