Gemanafushi Ice Plant Temporarily Closed Due to Ammonia Leak: MIFCO

Services at the GA. Gemanafushi ice plant have been suspended due to an ammonia 'leak', according to the operator, Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO).

MIFCO's General Manager of Fish Collection, Ahmed Zahir, stated that the Gemanafushi ice plant was temporarily closed prioritizing safety and security following the ammonia leak. While a full investigation into the incident is underway, MIFCO engineers are also carrying out repair work, Zahir said. However, Zahir did not specify a date when the facility would resume operations.

Newly established in Gemanafushi with Indian assistance, the ice plant was brought into operation and officially began providing services on February 27. On the day it opened, the produced ice was distributed to fishermen for free. However, the facility was closed one day after it began providing services.

The Gemanafushi ice plant is developed with the capacity to produce 50 tonnes of block ice per day and store 100 tonnes of ice.
