Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has brought the GDh. Gadhdhoo Ice Plant back into operation.
MIFCO stated that the Gadhdhoo Ice Plant, which previously had a capacity of 25 tonnes, was brought into operation after being upgraded to produce 50 tonnes of flake ice per day. Furthermore, unlike other ice plants that produce flake ice, instead of manually collecting the ice, the Gadhdhoo Ice Plant will pour the ice directly into the ice bucket with the help of the plant, MIFCO said.
"Because of this, fishermen will be able to get ice easily," MIFCO said.
In addition to the Gadhdhoo Ice Plant, ice plants are being operated in 5 other islands under MIFCO's supervision.
Ice plants currently operated by MIFCO in other islands:
- Hoarafushi – 25 tonnes (flake)
- Maduvvari – 25 tonnes (flake)
- Gaafaru – 25 tonnes (flake)
- Thinadhoo – 50 tonnes (block ice)
- Fuvahmulah – 25 tonnes (flake)
MIFCO's facilities:
- Felivaru Fisheries Complex – 100 tonnes (block ice)
- Kooddoo Fisheries Complex – 80 tonnes (block ice)
- Addu Fisheries Complex – 50 tonnes (flake)
Following Fenaka's decision to stop operating some of the ice plants it previously ran, MIFCO states that final preparations are underway to take over 18 ice plants currently operated under Fenaka's supervision.
On the day Fenaka announced it would stop operating ice plants, the company's senior officials stated that they would continue to provide ice to fishermen until all procedures for handing them over to MIFCO are completed, or until the entire handover process is finished.
