The Fuvahmulah City Council has decided to hold a fishing competition as part of the activities to mark this year's Fishermen's Day.
The competition, titled "Fuvahmulah City Council Masrace 2025", will take place on December 10, coinciding with the 45th Fishermen's Day celebrations.
The City Council has now opened the opportunity to participate in the race. Teams can participate by registering their team name and the name of the fishing vessel they will use via a dedicated form. The council requests interested parties to complete the registration form before 12:00 on 25 November 2025. Each team must consist of a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 8 members, including the captain.
The rules of the competition have been published on the council's website and Facebook page, and are attached to the announcement published in the government gazette. According to the rules, a judging panel comprising three experienced fishing experts will select the winners. Points will be awarded based on the largest fish caught and the total weight of the catch. Cash prizes will be awarded to the winning teams.
Competition Prizes:
- First place team: MVR 10,000
- Second place team: MVR 7,000
- Third place team: MVR 5,000
- Team catching the largest fish: MVR 3,000
A special category for general fishermen is also included as part of this competition. According to the rules, any vessel that departs for fishing on 10 December 2025 and returns to weigh their catch between 07:00 and 10:30 on that day can participate. The winner will be determined by the highest total weight of fish weighed, with a prize of MVR 5,000 allocated for the winning team.
