The foundation has been laid for the ice plant being developed in Dh. Bandidhoo under the government's Public Sector Investment Programme (PSIP).
The foundation stone was laid during a special ceremony held in Dh. Bandidhoo, as part of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's ongoing tour of Dhaalu Atoll.
The foundation stone was laid by Minister of Fisheries Ahmed Shiyam and the CEO of Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) Dr. Vitaly Lyubimof. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu participated in the ceremony.
Under an agreement between the Ministry of Fisheries and MIFCO, the project to establish the ice plant was awarded to MIFCO on 24 September 2024. Under the agreement, MIFCO is required to complete the 8 million Rufiyaa project within 8 months.
The ice plant being developed in Bandidhoo has the capacity to produce 30 tonnes of tube ice per day and store 50 tonnes of ice.
As part of the government's efforts to resolve the difficulties faced by fishermen in obtaining ice, work is underway to identify areas without ice plants and establish them. The government and MIFCO are also working together to bring currently non-operational ice plants back into operation.
