The Coast Guard has intercepted a foreign vessel operating illegally in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the Maldives.
MNDF stated that the vessel was intercepted on suspicion of engaging in illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing within the special economic maritime zone. However, they did not disclose when the vessel was intercepted or its country of origin.
Last month, the Coast Guard also intercepted two vessels operating illegally in Maldivian waters. Prior to that, vessels from neighboring countries have been detained and fined for attempting to fish in Maldivian territory. In some cases, the vessels have also been confiscated by the state.
