A foreign fishing boat operating in the Maldives Exclusive Economic Zone has been captured.
The Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) stated that a foreign fishing boat operating in the Maldives Exclusive Economic Zone was captured and taken under Coast Guard custody. MNDF also noted that efforts are currently underway to bring the vessel, along with the five people on board, to the Male' harbor. It is not yet clear which country the captured boat belongs to.
The Coast Guard occasionally captures vessels that illegally enter and fish in the Maldives Exclusive Economic Zone. Captured boats are taken under Coast Guard custody, court proceedings are completed, the companies to which such vessels belong are fined, and in some cases, such vessels are confiscated by the state.
