The GDh. Fiyoaree Council has requested the Ministry of Fisheries to bring the island's ice plant into operation.
The council made this request during a meeting held today with Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam. According to the Fisheries Ministry, during the meeting, the council requested the operationalization of the Fiyoaree ice plant and the deployment of a trolling FAD (vadu kandhufathi) for the youth of the island.
The Fiyoaree ice plant was previously operated by Fenaka. It has been many days since the ice plant stopped issuing ice to fishermen. Following Fenaka's cessation of ice plant operations, 12 ice plants previously operated by them have so far been handed over to MIFCO, but the Fisheries Ministry previously stated that the GDh. Fiyoaree ice plant has not yet been handed over to MIFCO. However, the reason for not handing it over to MIFCO was not stated.
Due to the unavailability of ice from Fiyoaree, vessels from Fiyoaree and nearby islands are currently buying ice from the GDh. Thinadhoo ice plant and the Kooddoo Fisheries Complex. Fishermen have noted that this is a significant expense from all perspectives. This is due to the major burden of having to burn many barrels of fuel to travel to those locations to obtain the ice needed to go fishing.
In addition to the Minister, some senior officials of the Ministry participated in today's meeting. During this meeting, the latest updates on the fish factory planned to be built in Fiyoaree were shared with the council.
