Five vessels have so far taken ice under the opportunity opened by the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) to issue ice on credit to vessels selling fish to the company.
The company decided last Thursday to issue ice on credit in installments up to 10 kilos to vessels weighing fish to MIFCO.
While MIFCO facilities were ready to issue ice this morning, MIFCO just stated that 5 vessels have taken 21 tonnes of ice so far today. These vessels took ice from Lh. Felivaru. MIFCO said that another vessel is also currently taking ice.
No ice has been taken from the Addu Fisheries Complex so far. MIFCO said this is because many vessels in that region have RSW plants. No vessels have taken ice from Kooddoo yet either. The reason for this is not yet clear.
MIFCO started issuing ice on credit to fishermen to encourage them to go fishing. On the 22nd of this month, MIFCO also issued free ice at a rate of three tonnes per vessel. MIFCO is doing such things targeted at fishermen because they are not getting enough fish during this period. Fishermen say they now want to weigh fish to private companies because MIFCO's prices are low. This is because they get better prices from those companies than from MIFCO.
